And the winner is...

Now that my backpacking trip is over, I made a list of impressions of cities visited.

Most Livable: Shanghai

By far the most modern and comfortable.

Most Necks Broken In Turning To See The Foreigner: Qingdao
As alluded to in an earlier post, this was the most off-the-tourist-path city.

Best Food: Hangzhou
Home of "Snack Street", as previously mentioned.

Best Scenery: Suzhou
Its world-famed gardens have a reason to be.

Most Greenspace: Nanjing
Surprisingly, this large city still holds claim to large forests and grassy areas--something I've missed dearly in coming here.

Overall Best Experience: Shanghai
Overall, my favorite city was Shanghai, and I'm most likely to return there. Although Beijing is too a nice city, if I were ever to live in China it would be (as of now) in Shanghai. The community of Americans and other foreigners living there is large, attractive, and doesn't seem at all like a bad way to spend a few years.

On another note, Princeton in Beijing has started. With the flick of a pen and a "Well, here's to learning", I've signed away my English for the next two months.

I liked Shanghai a lot too! I even said to my friend I'd rather live in Shanghai than in Beijing since it's closer to beautiful Hangzhou and Suzhou.

However, he did bring up one important point, they don't speak standard Mandarin in Shanghai, which could wreak havoc on our own Mandarin skills ::gasp:: :)
