Allow Me To Introduce Myself

As part of the wonderful Richard Light Fellowship, I'm asked to keep a blog about my travel experiences that the generous Fellowship is funding. For those of you who don't know me, my name is David Demres and I'm an undergraduate at Yale, class of 2011. My original home is in the mitten-shaped state of Michigan, and I run competitively (thus I will be "running" China this summer... heh heh get it?). I have about forty-eight hours before I leave, so it seems appropriate to get going with things.

I can feel your questions burning--what are you doing in China? How long will you be there? Boy, can I tell you. My trip is planned in three parts:
Part I is a ReachOut program with other Yale students spanning May 23-June 6. ReachOut is a volunteer program, and we'll be doing everything from attending meetings with local NGOs to teaching kids English in after school programs.
Part II is backpacking from June 7-20, with the itinerary and members of the trip still TBA.
Part III is the main show: Princeton in Beijing, June 20-August 16. Princeton in Beijing (PiB) is a Chinese language learning program held at Beijing Normal University, and covers two semesters worth of college material.

I'll be updating as often as possible, at least once a week. Comment here to keep me company while I'm away!

David, Very interesting details about the (bad) air pollution and (good) tea shop. I am looking forward to reading more.
